Rising Civic AI Leaders offers participants introductory policy training and the opportunity to build a network of civic AI peers and mentors. The training is for new and onboarding state and local government officials in charge of AI portfolios. Participants will learn:
- About government and how it differs from industry,
- How to communicate effectively with government stakeholders,
- How to map key stakeholders inside and outside of government,
- How to advocate for policy change, and
- How to best work with civil society and/or industry.
This community of incoming civil servants, who will be able to scale best practices and resist the influence of corporate lobbying and vendor lock-in, will lay the foundation upon which future civic AI work is built. We will:
- Host weekly community networking sessions to provide a safe space for Civic AI Leaders to share their experiences,
- Curate and facilitate mentorship relationships and strategic connections to support Civic AI Leaders’ professional development and public service effectiveness, and
- Host a kick-off and culminating event in Washington, DC for in-person exchanges and solidifying of next steps.
This course focuses on US policymaking generally, but will have a particular nexus to California (where the Policy Academy is based). Participants in these courses will need to be AI experts, but do not need to have experience with policymaking. We specifically seek to accept applicants focused on social impact.
